Positions: Attack, Midfield, SSDM

My name is Sawyer Leko. I live in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada, and I am completing grade 11 in June 2024. I am 16 years old and have been playing lacrosse now for seven years. I play both box lacrosse and field lacrosse in a variety of positions. I have played with the Regina Royals Saskatchewan Provincial A traveling field lacrosse team for the last three years and the Weyburn Rattlers field lacrosse house team since its inception, in a variety of positions.  I am playing with the Regina Queen City Kings Jr B 1 box lacrosse team. The Kings play in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, including teams in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

In 2022 and 2023, I played with Team Saskatchewan at the Canadian Field Lacrosse Nationals in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. In box lacrosse, I have played with my home association as well as the Provincial A Box Lacrosse Stealth for the past four years. While playing with the 16U Provincial A Stealth, I led the team in scoring and was third overall in the province. I have played on Team Saskatchewan Box Lacrosse teams since 2019 and, this past summer, represented my province at the 2023 Box Lacrosse Nationals in Regina. As an additional experience, I was a starter for the Shattler Academy Elite Team which participated in the US Box Nationals in Phoenix in February 2023.

I am dedicated, hard-working, and coachable. I am one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. I am constantly watching games and videos trying to learn new skills and systems. One of my assets is being able to read the field and see my open teammates to help develop the play. I can play a variety of positions in field lacrosse including attack, midfielder, and short stick midfielder.

My coach has called me his “Swiss Army Knife” as I can adapt and shift easily to any offensive or defensive position. I have good grades, have volunteered to teach lacrosse at one of the local elementary schools here in Weyburn, and am a mentor/ “big brother” to a student who needs some guidance. I have been named one of the assistant coaches for the Team Sask U15 team competing at the 2024 Nationals in Regina this summer. I have a part-time job and contribute financially as much as I can so that I can travel on these teams. My parents are willing to help me with this goal, but I want to be able to say that I did much of it myself.

My goal is to get an education in the business or nursing field. To date, I have not put much thought into where I would like to play, but I am hopeful that once coaches see my skills, dedication, and passion they will reach out to discuss a possible future at the college level.

Starting in the fall of 2024, I will be attending Fork Union Military School in Virginia and will be playing for coach Chris Panos for my grade 12 year. I will attend as a senior, but also play on the postgraduate field lacrosse team. I realize that I have a year until college, but I hope that you will follow me on my journey as you will not be disappointed.
